At that juncture, we \u201cplayed\u201d with ChatGPT, asking it to <a href=\"https:\/\/datamobility.it\/magazine\/puo-lintelligenza-artificiale-risolvere-i-problemi-della-mobilita-urbana-lo-abbiamo-chiesto-a-chat-gpt\/\">solve urban mobility problems<\/a>, testing its ability to optimize traffic and improve infrastructure planning, even writing a Mobility Plan for Rome. Even then, the results were surprising, although we already recognized this tool as a good ally rather than a substitute. But what can we say now, after a year of familiarizing ourselves with AI and conducting concrete experiments in several areas of our work? In this article, we want to revisit the topic by exploring the impact of AI on mobility in the coming years, examining the three pillars on which we believe it will rest: data, skills, and governance.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>A marriage made in heaven: AI and MaaS<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If we were to ask which element of mobility will be most impacted by artificial intelligence, we would undoubtedly all think of MaaS. Recently, for example, the municipal public transport company in Bari, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtab.it\/it\/140-news-chatbot\/2649-progetto-amtab-chatbot\">AMTAB, unveiled NIC-O<\/a> (New Intelligent Communication), an AI GPT-based chatbot service capable of interacting with citizens and understanding their needs.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>NIC-O was developed with the aim of assisting users in navigating the AMTAB website, ensuring a smooth, accessible, and efficient interaction. Unlike common chatbots, an advanced chatbot such as NIC-O is not limited to answering specific questions, but is also capable of performing much more complex tasks and activities. Thanks to the use of machine learning algorithms, and having been trained to dialogue with users, it is capable of conversing with people and interacting with them in a fairly logical and coherent manner. The service is currently available in an experimental BETA version and is structured into several macro-areas, each dedicated to specific services provided by AMTAB: News, Public Transport, MUVT (the dedicated app), Parking Areas, and Reports.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>From this example, the first of its kind in Italy, it is easy to imagine how, in the coming years, GPT chatbots will become the main interface between mobility operators and their users, becoming true MaaS travel planners that will guide users step-by-step through the various mobility services.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>According to a recent article published in ScienceDirect magazine by researchers Eriketti Servou, Frauke Behrendt, and Maja Horst entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590198223000532\">Data, AI, and governance in MaaS \u2013 Leading to sustainable mobility<\/a>,\u201d AI will have a significant impact on MaaS systems in the following areas:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personalization of travel options: analyzing user data to formulate tailored proposals and making MaaS more attractive than private vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Real-time data analysis: processing the enormous amount of data generated by different mobility services to optimize routes, reduce waiting times, and improve the overall efficiency of the transport system<\/li>\n<li>Support for mobility policies: helping urban planners and policymakers make informed decisions based on predictive traffic models and mobility trends, contributing to more sustainable urban planning<\/li>\n<li>Development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): the integration of AI can facilitate more effective traffic management and a dynamic response to real-time travel conditions<\/li>\n<li>Governance and regulation: the role of advanced algorithms in decision-making can lead to the emergence of new forms of mobility governance, which will require a balance between algorithmic control and human governance to ensure that public values and sustainability remain at the center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Examining these elements, as anticipated in the introduction, from our point of view, we can identify three pillars on which the impacts of the spread of artificial intelligence on people&#8217;s mobility, the work of technicians in the sector, and the decisions of politicians will rest, for better or for worse: data, skills, and governance. Where do we start? As always, of course: with data.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>The role of data in the MaaS ecosystem<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The role of data in mobility, as the name of our magazine emphasizes, is fundamental: MaaS cannot exist without data. The functioning of the MaaS ecosystem will depend on the ability to collect and integrate data from different sources, such as transport operators, infrastructure managers, and the users of the services themselves. Therefore, in order to be truly effective and efficient, the MaaS system will need to be able to collect and integrate the following into its platforms:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Correctly compiled GTFS data<\/li>\n<li>Data on the status of transport networks (times and speeds)<\/li>\n<li>Data on the purchase and use of services (tickets, season tickets, tap-in and tap-off)<\/li>\n<li>Data on service usage and frequency (passenger counts, turnstiles)<\/li>\n<li>Aggregated origin-destination data<\/li>\n<li>Weather data<\/li>\n<li>Data on parking availability (public parking, park &amp; ride, charging stations)<\/li>\n<li>Data on events and fairs<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This is just a taste of a list that is certainly not exhaustive. Furthermore, this data must be available both in real time and historically. The complexity of managing this data is far from trivial, especially from the point of view of creating a standard, which is essential to make it usable for platforms that need to integrate it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cA standard to tame them\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>From a European perspective, a lot of work is being done on defining standards. The <a href=\"https:\/\/napcore.eu\/\">NAPCORE<\/a> organization aims to coordinate and harmonize over 30 NAP (National Access Point) platforms in Europe through the definition and application of standards such as:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/datex2.eu\/about\/\">DATEX II<\/a>: the standard that defines the digitization and automation of the entire mobility ecosystem, contributing to the safety, sustainability, and efficiency of passenger and freight travel. DATEX II enables the standardization of data provision for all types of vehicles, from bicycles to heavy goods vehicles. It allows the dynamics of transport infrastructure availability and incidents occurring on it to be expressed digitally in a standardized way.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transmodel-cen.eu\/\">Transmodel<\/a>: the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) reference data model for public and multimodal transport. Transmodel acts as a lexicon that outlines the terminology of the public transport sector and the links between various elements, thus establishing a standardized language for the industry and sector. The standards it defines are<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transmodel-cen.eu\/netex-standard\/\">NeTEx<\/a> for the exchange of information on public transport networks, timetables, and associated data<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transmodel-cen.eu\/siri-standard\/\">SIRI<\/a> for the exchange of real-time operational information on public transport performance.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Data dissemination: from theory to reality<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As we have seen, the definition of data standards seems to be quite mature both in concept and in its organization. The same cannot be said, however, for data dissemination, particularly in Italy. On this issue, especially with regard to public transport data, there remains a problem that is purely cultural in nature.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If we analyze the dissemination of GTFS data, which represents the first step in digitization in the world of public transport, through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transit.land\/map#4.41\/44.27\/15.43)\">one of the sites<\/a> that collects and publishes GTFS data from around the world, it is clear that large areas of our territory do not have data (Figure 1). Suffice it to say that Italy has data available in only 63 municipalities, and real-time GTFS-RT data is available in open data format only in Turin and Rome. At the regional level, the most virtuous regions are Piedmont, Tuscany, Marche, and Sardinia. However, there remains a large discrepancy between large cities and rural areas or small towns.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Open data dissemination of GTFS data<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s talk about it<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The dissemination of GTFS is just one example of how there is still a lack of awareness and cultural resistance to the adoption of open data in Italy. This is due to a combination of a lack of knowledge about the benefits of open data and a traditional reluctance to share information openly, as well as a lack of the resources and technical skills needed to effectively implement and manage open data systems. This brings us to the second pillar on which we would like to continue the discussion, with the help of experts and professionals in the field who wish to participate: how will skills be crucial in determining the impact of AI in the transport sector? And what other obstacles and opportunities exist with regard to data for the development of AI in the service of mobility?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As we like to do in these cases, the debate is open: <a
